Questions
Things people ask first.
Plain answers about getting Ledsten, using it, your privacy and the assistant. Something missing? The how it works page goes through the whole app.
Getting it
What does it cost?
Nothing. Ledsten is free to download and use, with no account and nothing locked behind a later purchase. All 51 guides and 14 quick cards come with it.
When can I get it?
Ledsten is still being built. Leave your email on the install page and we’ll send one email when the first version is ready.
Will it run on my computer?
Ledsten is being made for Windows 10 or later and macOS 13 or later. The version you pick decides how much memory your computer needs: setup suggests Standard from about 11.1 GB of memory and Pro from about 39.7 GB, and otherwise Lite, the smallest. Lite runs on an 8 GB computer. Setup also warns you if you pick one your computer is too small for. Compare the versions.
Is there a phone or Linux version?
Not at launch: Ledsten is a Mac and Windows app. It can export a phone copy of your household’s medical details, first-aid cards, supplies and plans as one file that opens on any phone without the internet.
Using it
Do I need the internet at all?
Once. During setup Ledsten downloads the assistant — a single file of 3.2 GB, 5.0 GB or 16 GB depending on the version you pick. After that, everything works with the internet switched off. If you can’t get online even once, someone can give you the file on a USB stick instead: see the offline install kit.
Do I have to type in all my supplies by hand?
No. You can paste in a list, or open a spreadsheet, CSV, text file or PDF you already have. With “Smart parse” switched on, the assistant sorts a messy list into items for you; either way, you check a preview before anything is saved.
Can I change versions later?
Yes, from Settings → Model tiers. Choose a version you’ve already downloaded and press “Set active”; it loads in a moment, and Ledsten re-indexes its library for it in the background while you keep asking. A version you don’t have yet needs its file first — downloaded, which is the one other time Ledsten needs the internet, or installed from a file. You can keep more than one and delete the ones you don’t use. Your supplies, plans and settings stay as they are — only the assistant changes.
How do I update it?
Download the new version from this site and install it over the old one; your household, supplies and plans are kept. Ledsten never updates itself, because that would mean going online on its own.
Privacy
Where does my information go?
Nowhere you don’t send it. Your household details, supplies, plans and conversations are saved in Ledsten’s own folder on your computer, and there’s no account and no server for them to be sent to. They only leave if you print them or save a phone copy to share yourself. Read the privacy policy.
How do I know it really stays offline?
The app’s window is locked so it can’t reach the internet, and a guard stops and counts anything that tries anyway; the Offline status screen shows the count and this session’s log. During setup it tries to go online on purpose, three different ways, and shows you each attempt being stopped (those test attempts aren’t counted).
The assistant
Can the assistant get things wrong?
Yes — like any AI, it can. That’s why an answer that comes from a guide names it, so you can open that guide and read it yourself. The guides and quick cards are written out in full and don’t depend on the assistant at all, and for anything medical, please read the note at the bottom of this page.
What is the assistant?
Gemma 4, an AI model Google released for anyone to use, running entirely on your own computer. Ledsten gives it the relevant passages from its guides for each question, and it answers from those. Your own PDFs are searched too, but for now they rarely make it into an answer.
